Tool time is a blog post that talks about one of the tools I use in therapy. They are strategies for coping, insight or change. I get so excited about the idea that psychology strategies and tools become widely known so everyone feels more equipped to deal with life’s ups and downs. Tool Time is an invitation to know these ‘therapy secrets’ without having to ever step foot in a therapist’s office. You’re welcome.
RAIN is one of my favourite tools. This one I came across when I was into learning all I could about Mindfulness. Tara Brach is a psychologist who embodies meditation, mindfulness and compassion. I was drawn to her website because of the many ways she describes how to access self-compassion, free resources and how she walks the walk. Sometimes her poetic language and metaphors about nature are tough for me to connect with. But her amazing free meditations, acronyms and hypnotic voice more than make up for it!
Here’s a link to RAIN on Tara Brach’s website. The website is worth looking into if you’re interested in Mindfulness or self-compassion.
TOOL: RAIN
WHY USE IT:
- To increase self awareness which is a MUST HAVE if you want to make changes to the way you think or feel.
- Shifts your reaction to an emotion which makes the emotion less intense and not last as long.
- Increases self compassion which helps mood and self esteem, especially when done regularly.
- Helps with irritability, anger, self-criticism, shame, resentment and more.
- It’s a thing you can do when you have a rough night with baby, when you notice your reactions to your partner escalate or when the in-laws are making judgements.
WHEN TO USE IT:
- As often as you can. Start with less intense emotions and work your way to the harder ones once you feel you’ve got the hang of it.
