Teletherapy FAQ

Is Teletherapy safe?

Rooted Support uses a secure platform called OnCall Health. It is compliant with all personal health information legislation in Canada. Its video conferencing is encrypted and is never stored. See their privacy statement.

How does it work?

Video Conferencing: When you book an appointment for a teletherapy session you will be emailed instructions for how to login to your account with OnCall. Once the session begins you can login and join the session.

Phone Appointments: Your therapist will contact you over the phone at your scheduled time.

Chatting: You will have access to secure live chats during your session with OnCall.

Email:

  1. Book your appointment with OnCall.
  2. Write an email to your therapist. Spend some time writing down what’s happening in your life right now, the struggles you’re facing, any background you believe is relevant, any questions you have for your therapist and anything else you want to share.
  3. Save the document. Take precautions to preserve your privacy (google: how to lock a document, or delete the document as soon as you’ve sent it). We recommend using a Word document and using the following link to password protect your correspondence:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/protect-a-document-with-a-password-05084cc3-300d-4c1a-8416-38d3e37d6826

  1. Send the document through OnCall Health (secure platform) at least one hour prior to your scheduled appointment time.
  2. During your scheduled appointment time, the therapist will respond to your email with questions, insights, comments and suggestions. They will use the full hour to respond. Your therapist will send you the document back to you through OnCall Health. The document will include your responses in the font you use and their responses in a different colour and font throughout your document.
  3. You then have the option of booking another appointment. If you do, then respond to the therapist in the same font and colour as you did previously. Submit the document the same as before.

Is teletherapy for everybody?

At this time, only residents of Alberta may book for Teletherapy appointments. Our psychologist is registered only at the College of Alberta Psychologists.

If you are in danger of hurting someone else or yourself it is important to seek urgent therapy or call the distress centre at 403-466-4397. Teletherapy is not an urgent service.

General Questions

How do you set your fees?

Fees are based on the recommendations of the Alberta Psychological Association. But we also offer fees on a sliding scale for those who need it.

What are your fees?

Individual and couple sessions are $220/hour for sessions with Kristin, R.Psych, $90/hour for sessions with Cathy, RPN.

Group therapy sessions are $60/person per hour of a group session (i.e. a six week group, one hour group would cost $360). Webinars cost $20/session.

We also offer a sliding scale for those who need it.

Am I eligible for coverage?

Many Extended Health Care Plans (e.g. Blue Cross) can reimburse part of or total fees for Psychology Services and services provided by a nurse. Contact your insurance agent for details or look through your plan for words including “psychologist”, “psychotherapy”, or “counselling.” Further coverage may be provided by an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), Health Spending Account or Wellness Spending Account. Check your benefits package for details.

Services provided by a Psychologist are eligible for a federal tax credit. See this link for details or speak to an accountant for more information.

I need to access sliding scale fees, how does this work?

Money should not be a factor in getting support. Rooted Support offers services on a sliding scale. If you cannot afford services and do not have insurance please contact Rooted Support to set up alternative arrangements or recommendations for service options.

How do I provide payment?

Payment for sessions can be made with a credit card through OnCall Health. If you wish to pay with e-transfer please email in advance of your appointment.
